Your Bhutan adventure begins with your arrival at Paro International Airport, one of the most spectacular airports in the world, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks and pristine valleys. After completing arrival formalities, you will be welcomed by your local guide and transferred to Thimphu, the peaceful capital city of Bhutan.

The scenic drive follows the winding Paro and Wang Chhu valleys, offering your first impressions of Bhutan’s untouched landscapes, traditional settlements, and mountain scenery.

As this is your first day at altitude, the itinerary is designed at a relaxed pace, allowing you time to adjust comfortably while beginning your introduction to Bhutanese culture.

National Memorial Chorten
Visit this iconic white stupa, built in honour of His Majesty the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is one of Thimphu’s most sacred landmarks, where locals gather daily to pray, spin prayer wheels, and perform circumambulations.

National Folk Heritage Museum
Discover Bhutan’s traditional way of life through an impressive collection of household items, farming tools, and cultural artefacts displayed within a beautifully preserved traditional farmhouse.

National Textile Museum
Explore Bhutan’s exceptional weaving heritage and learn about the intricate techniques behind the country’s famous handwoven textiles, royal garments, and traditional clothing.

Institute of Zorig Chusum (School of Thirteen Arts and Crafts)

Today, experience one of Bhutan’s most celebrated cultural events—the Thimphu Tshechu, a vibrant festival that brings together spirituality, tradition, and community.

Held at the magnificent Tashichho Dzong, the festival attracts monks, performers, and local residents dressed in their finest traditional attire. The courtyard comes alive with sacred music, colourful costumes, and symbolic masked dances.

Tashichho Dzong
Explore this impressive fortress-monastery, the seat of Bhutan’s government and the Central Monastic Body. Its elegant architecture reflects the harmony between Bhutan’s spiritual and administrative traditions.

Thimphu Tshechu Festival
Witness sacred Cham dances performed by monks and trained dancers. Each performance represents Buddhist teachings, sharing stories of wisdom, protection, compassion, and the triumph of good over negativity.

Unveiling of the Sacred Thangka
Experience the remarkable ceremony where a large silk thangka depicting Guru Padmasambhava and Buddhist deities is revealed. This deeply spiritual moment is considered highly auspicious among devotees.

Buddha Dordenma Statue – Kuensel Phodrang
Later, visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking Thimphu Valley. Enjoy breathtaking views of the capital, especially during the evening when the city begins to glow beneath the mountains.

Punakha | 1,242m (4,075ft)

After breakfast, depart for Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital and one of the country’s most fertile and culturally significant valleys.

The journey takes you through beautiful mountain landscapes, forests, and high passes before descending into the warmer Punakha Valley.

Highlights

Dochula Pass (3,100m)
Stop at this spectacular mountain pass, home to the famous 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. Built by the Queen Mother, these sacred monuments commemorate Bhutanese soldiers and symbolise peace and prosperity. On clear days, the pass offers magnificent views of the Himalayan range.

Punakha Dzong
Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, considered one of Bhutan’s finest architectural masterpieces. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it sits beautifully at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and serves as the winter residence of the Je Khenpo and the Central Monastic Body.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
Take a peaceful walk through rice fields and rural landscapes to reach this stunning hilltop temple. Built by the Queen Mother, the chorten was created to promote peace, harmony, and protection for Bhutan.Overnight: Punakha

Gangtey | 2,900m (9,500ft)

Continue exploring the cultural treasures of Punakha before travelling towards the tranquil mountain landscapes of Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley.

Highlights

Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility)
Enjoy a scenic walk through traditional villages and rice fields to this unique temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the “Divine Madman.” The temple remains one of Bhutan’s most distinctive spiritual sites.

Wangdue Phodrang
Pass through this historic town, famous for traditional crafts including bamboo products, slate carving, and stonework. Visit the impressive Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, dramatically positioned above the river valley.

Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey Valley)
Continue into this peaceful glacial valley, surrounded by forests and mountains. Known for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, the valley is also the winter habitat of the endangered Black-necked Crane.

After breakfast, return to Paro through some of Bhutan’s most beautiful landscapes, passing mountain forests, rivers, and traditional villages.

Highlights

Drukgyal Dzong
Explore the historic ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, built in 1647 to celebrate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan forces. Though damaged by fire, the site remains an important symbol of Bhutan’s history and resilience.

National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong)
Visit this former watchtower, now home to Bhutan’s national museum. Discover an impressive collection of Buddhist paintings, textiles, traditional weapons, religious artefacts, and cultural treasures.

Paro Valley
Enjoy the peaceful beauty of Paro Valley, surrounded by sacred temples, traditional farmhouses, and spectacular mountain views, including the majestic Mount Jomolhari.

Today, embark on the unforgettable journey to Bhutan’s most famous landmark—the sacred Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest.

Built dramatically on a cliff face approximately 900 metres above Paro Valley, Taktsang is among the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas.

According to Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, Guru Padmasambhava arrived here in the 8th century on the back of a flying tigress and meditated in the caves where the monastery now stands.

Highlights

Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Hike through peaceful pine forests decorated with colourful prayer flags before reaching the famous viewpoint overlooking the monastery. The complete excursion usually takes around 5–7 hours depending on walking pace and time spent exploring the temples.

Paro Rinpung Dzong
Visit this magnificent fortress-monastery, known for its impressive architecture, spiritual importance, and role as an important religious and administrative centre.

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight.
